Music & Movement: Leap Day!
February 29th, 10:15 and 11am
Opening Song: Glad to See You by Peter and Ellen Allard
"When I'm glad to see all of you, I like to clap my hands, stamp my feet, I especially like to shake my hips (wiggle, wiggle, wiggle!), I even like to nod my head, and then I like to see how many times I can blink my eyes."
I pulled out our tadpole to frog puppet to show the kids... lots of excitement. I'm not sure if you can still purchase this anywhere. It was here when I started. Folkmanis makes a similar thing.
Book: Guess Who Jumps by Dana Meachen Rau
Whoo... non-fiction!
Song: Five Little Frogs by Dennis Buck
Used stick puppets while kids used their hands to do the fingerplay
Book: Big Frog Can't Fit In by Mo Willems
Song: Little Green Frog
This is a traditional children or camp song with many versions. I did one similar to this video from King County Library. Kids and caregivers really got into it. Lyrics are some thing like:
mmm (blink) AGH (stick out tongue and bug eyes) went the little green frog one day
mmm (blink) AGH (stick out tongue and bug eyes) went the little green frog
mmm (blink) AGH (stick out tongue and bug eyes) went the little green frog one day
And they all went mmm mmm (blink, blink) AGH (stick out tongue and bug eyes)
BUT
We all know frogs go (clap) la dee dah dee dah (wiggle hands)
(clap) la dee dah dee dah (wiggle hands)
(clap) la dee dah dee dah (wiggle hands)
We all know frogs go (clap) la dee dah dee dah (wiggle hands)
They don't go mmm mmm (blink, blink) AGH (stick out tongue and bug eyes)
Activity: Lily Pad Hop
Like cooperative musical chairs. Set lily pad shapes (or in my case, pieces of green paper that we pretended were lily pads) and have kids hop and swim around until the music stops. When the music stops, they find a lily pad. I removed lily pads as the music was playing, so eventually, all the kids were stuck hopping to the same lily pad. I'll be honest, it was a little like herding cats to get the preschoolers to understand what they were supposed to be doing. I was happy they were hopping around and having a good time. From 2Care2Teach4Kids.com. A similar idea with cute pictures at Toddler Approved!
Song: Frog Went A-Courtin' by Dr. Jean
We acted the song out using her suggested actions. They didn't really get into this one, but part of my goal in these sessions is to expose them to a variety of music. Folk songs included. I don't mind that the kids didn't really do the actions with me, they still listened to the song.
Book: Leap Back Home to Me by Lauren Thompson
I hand out lengths ~ 1ft long of crepe paper and have the kids pass the streamer over their head each time the word "leap" is read in the book. (Which happens a lot!)
[I don't think I came up with this idea on my own, but I can't seem to find any source for it. If its your idea, please let me know so I can link up and credit you properly!]
Closing rhyme (from Ames Public Library)
We read a book / we sang a song / let's blow a kiss / and say so long!
(ASL sign for book, song, mime blowing a kiss, wave goodbye for so long)
