ABC Storytimes- Letter B

Another full house today, and 2 dads! Yay for dads! Also, I wore a butterfly headband for the entire storytime, and have already been asked what next week's headgear will be. Uh-oh. I have created an unintentional Thing. Putting my thinking cap on (ba-dum-shhh) for upcoming letters!

Books:
(Note to self: did not have time to read Grumpy Bird).

ECRR2 Activities:

  • Hand out letters as kids come to the storytime area and are seated nicely. Call them up to put letters on the Chicka Chicka tree (I called them by colors again); sing ABCs (Playing & Singing)
  • Put together the letter flannel puzzle (thanks to Storytime Katie for the inspiration) (Playing & Talking)
  • Letter of the day writing practice with dry erase boards (Writing) I have a hard time counting while doing other things. There were so many kids I ran out of Chicka letters (we don't have a full set anymore), so I wasn't sure if my 25 white boards were going to cover the entire group. I elected to skip this today and buy some extras rather than face the crushed, sad faces of the kids would would have to share while everyone else played with their own boards.
Extensions:

  • BooBoo by Olivier Dunrea is a hilarious little story, but it is little. I have (sorry Mr. Dunrea!) scanned all the pages of the book and enlarged the images as much as I could and tell this story with story cards.
  • 5 Pretty Butterflies flannel stick puppets (this set was made by the previous librarian, so I'm not entirely sure who to credit, but this is the rhyme)
  • Bubble medley: I passed out bubbles to the grownups and we blow a boatload of bubbles for the kids to dance in during the bubbles. When the last song was winding down, I started a countdown from 10 and we put the bubbles away. That was an on-the-spot choice and it worked amazingly well. None of the kids whined about the bubbles going away.
Songs:
  1. "Can't Wait to Celebrate" by Jim Gill from Jim Gill's Irrational Anthem
  2. Bubble medley
    1. "B-B-B Bubbles" by Pam Schiller from School Days
    2. "Ten Little Bubbles" by Sara Hickman from Toddler
    3. "Bubbles" by Yo Gabba Gabba from Music is Awesome
  3. "Reach for the Sky" by Wee Sing from Wee Sing Children's Songs and Fingerplays

Note: I bought 6 rolls of perforated bubble wrap at Dollar Tree. We used 4 rolls. Each sheet is ~ 12 inches long, with 6 sheets per roll. I used fingerpaint paper for the paintings.

Order of presentation (to the best of my memory): Chicka Chicka tree, Letter Puzzle, Jim Gill song, Butterfly, Butterfly, Book Book Book, Bubble medley, BooBoo, Five Butterflies, Reach for the Sky, craft
