(Not) Flannel Friday- Ten Apples Up on Top Prop

Since my "Letter A" storytime conveniently fell in the fall, apple ideas were in abundance. I came across this idea on Pinterest, and knew a trip to the local dollar store was in order.

Ten Apples Up on Top Prop

(Thank you to Storytime Baby for modeling the headband :))

Supplies:
  • Fake apples
  • Headband
  • E-6000 adhesive [Note: in trying to keep this a total dollar store project, I picked up some super glue with the other supplies. In a word: FAIL. I'll spare you the details, but let's just say, there was more super glue on my fingers than on the project. Stick to the E-6000 and you'll have much better results.]
Instructions
  1. Select your apples. I went with a variety of red and green.
  2. Trim any leaves or stems so that the apples can sit as snug as possible on top of each other.
  3. Find something to brace your prop while the glue dries. Styrofoam or something round like a big oatmeal container would work much better than the box I used.
  4. Make sure the area is well-ventilated-- the adhesive is potent!
  5. Glue and enjoy
At storytime, I plopped the prop on my head and asked the kids how many apples there were. They alternated between counting and giggling. Then we read the book.

This week's round up is hosted by Sharon at Rain Makes Applesauce. As always, check the Flannel Friday website, Facebook, and Pinterest accounts for more information and past Flannel Friday creations.

  1. That looks like so much fun! It would also be great for Read Across America day. Thanks for sharing and the tip about the adhesive.

  2. Oh my! This looks like so much fun. I like the idea of using the fake apples and a headband. Did any of the kids ask to try it on or wear it?

    1. Surprisingly.. none of them did. It was the first time many of them had seen me in a while, so maybe a little shyness is to blame. I should pull it our again in March for Read Across America like Sandy suggested and see what happens.

  3. LOVE IT! I have wondered if you could stick them with Velcro and add the apples as the story goes on. Maybe with smaller apple (like tree decorations)...I will have to try sometime...

    1. Ooo... velcro sounds promising. If you try it, let me know how it works. My original plan was to make headbands for 1-5 apples (after 5 things got a little too wobbly), but after the super glue debacle, the one headband was all the patience I had!

  4. Oh my goodness, how did I miss this one? Love it. Ten Apples is one that always begs to be propped or flanneled, but I never quite got around to it. LOVE!

    1. Doesn't it? If you ever want to borrow it... let me know. It's just chilling up on a shelf with the train hat and whistles. :)
