Cover Art for Hamsters to the rescue Cover Art for Say hello! Cover Art for Clip-clop

ECRR2 Activities:

  • Put Talk about letters on the Chicka Chicka tree; sing ABCs (Playing Talking & Singing)
  • Letter writing practice with the dry erase boards (Writing) There were 40 people at storytime today. Not enough boards to cover that!
Extensions:
  • Ten Horses
  • The Hamster in Her Cage (Tune: Wheels on the Bus) [I edited LaGrange's version to have feminine pronouns because I talked about all the things Ruby, my hamster, likes to do in her cage before we sang this song. So the kids sang a song about the things Ruby does.]
Songs:
  1. "Can't Wait to Celebrate" by Jim Gill from Jim Gill's Irrational Anthem
  2. "Listen to the Horses" by Raffi from More Singable Songs
  3. "Reach for the Sky" by Wee Sing from Wee Sing Children's Songs and Fingerplays
Craft: Hamster Collages

So I planned this entire storytime around the fact that I just got the world's cutest little Chinese Dwarf hamster. I brought in some of her bedding and food and the kids colored their hamsters and glued on the bedding and food collage style. If you don't have a hamster from whom to pilfer, cut up paper scraps (bedding) and some bird seed or a mix of corn, sunflower seeds, and some sort of dry grain would suffice. The nice thing about the real goods is that there's both touch and smell sensory elements enhancing the experience.

(I can't find the image I used to source it, but here's a similar one: Hamster image)
